Where was that crypt again? Which portal goes where? Where did the others build while you were away? In Valheim, the only answer is to launch the game, log in and open the map, and you only see what your character has explored.
Your server's save already holds the whole world. Now we read it.
On your server: a Map tab
Every time your Valheim server stops, we read the world save and draw its map. It appears in the Map tab of your server page, for every member of the server:
- The terrain, recalculated from the world seed: biomes, relief, lakes and rivers, Ashlands and Deep North included.
- What the group has explored. The rest stays hidden, as in the game. A button shows the whole world, if you'd rather not keep the surprise.
- What players built: bases, portals with their names, beds, workbenches, ships.
- The world's places: dungeons, runestones, camps, traders, boss altars, with the bosses already defeated marked as such. You choose which kinds of places to show.
The map never lists the world's players.
A link to share it
The server owner can create a public link to the map. It opens without an account and shows only the map: no server address, no password, no players. Unexplored areas stay hidden, with no button to reveal them. Disabling the link makes it stop working; creating a new one gives a different link.
Your solo world too, without uploading anything
On the Valheim map page, drop your world's folder (on Windows,
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local; the page also gives the Mac and Linux
paths) and you get the same map. Everything is read in your browser: your world is never uploaded.
And an import that no longer starts a new world in secret
On 8 October, a Valheim world was imported with its save incomplete: a file was missing next to the
.fwl2. The server could not load it, so it generated a new world, and the customer wasn't told.
Now such an import is refused, with a message explaining which files must sit next to the .fwl2, and your world on your PC
is untouched.
What this doesn't solve
- The map is only refreshed when the server stops, not while you play. A new base appears after the next stop.
- On a world modified by a mod that changes how the world is generated, the terrain we recalculate won't match yours. Bases, portals and places stay correct: they come from the save.
- Worlds from before 1.0 (
.fwland.dbfiles) aren't read. Load them once in an up-to-date Valheim: the game converts them.
