Mods on a Valheim server: BepInEx, ValheimPlus and your own mods
The short answer. On a TickServ Valheim server there are three ways to add mods: tick server-side mods in the settings (nothing for players to install), turn on ValheimPlus, or upload your own BepInEx mods into
bepinex/plugins/from the file explorer. In all three cases, the mods are installed at the server's next start.
1. Server-side mods, in one click
In the server settings, the Mods (server-side) option offers mods that run on the server only:
| Mod | What it does |
|---|---|
| LetMeSleep | Sleep without waiting for everyone to be in bed. |
| GroundReset | Dug-up terrain slowly repairs itself (outside protected areas). |
| ServerPasswordOnce | The password is asked only once. |
Your players have nothing to install, and console players (PS5, Switch 2, Xbox) still join through crossplay. Each of these mods was started on a real server before we offered it, in a fixed version: a mod update won't quietly break your server.
2. ValheimPlus
The ValheimPlus (mod) option installs ValheimPlus: stack sizes, portals that let every item through, and dozens of tweaks.
⚠️ ValheimPlus is installed on both sides. Every player needs it on their PC, in the same version as the server (the "WindowsClient" package on github.com/Grantapher/ValheimPlus); otherwise their game shows "incompatible version" and they can't join. The version the server installed is written in its logs. Console players can't install it.
ValheimPlus doesn't mix with server-side mods or with your own mods: pick one or the other.
3. Your own BepInEx mods
For a mod that isn't in the list (from Thunderstore or Nexus, for example):
- Download the mod to your computer and open its archive.
- In your TickServ dashboard, open Files and go to the
bepinex/plugins/folder. - Upload the mod's
.dllfile(s) (or its whole folder). - Start the server, or restart it if it's already running.
There's nothing else to switch on: when the folder holds a mod, BepInEx loads by itself at startup. Your mods are part of the server's data, so they're saved and restored every session, like your world. A stopped server accepts files too: they're put in place at the next start.
What to check first
- Is the mod server-side or client-side? Read its page: a "server-side only" mod asks nothing of players. A mod that adds items, creatures or interface must be installed by every player, in the same version, and it locks console players out.
- Its dependencies. If the mod's page lists any (Jötunn, for example), upload them to
bepinex/plugins/too. BepInEx itself is already provided by the server: don't upload it. - Whether it works with your Valheim version. A mod that loads isn't necessarily a mod that works: after startup, check the server logs. A mod written for an older version leaves errors there over and over.
To remove a mod, delete its file or folder in bepinex/plugins/, then restart.
